Thoroughbred Race Horse Trainer

Biography: 

Thoroughbred horse racing has always been a passion of Ed Moger's and he has devoted his life to it.

Ed was born on April 5, 1956 in Lakeland, Florida. Being infatuated at a young age by horse racing, he started his career on the racetrack as a groom for trainer, Jay Mills, while he attended the University of Washington in Seattle during the mid-1970's.

After serving an apprenticeship with Mills, Ed took out his first trainer's license in 1976. He won with his first starter in August 1976 at Playfair in Eastern Washington with a horse named Alert's Honey.

Ed campaigned with much success in the Northwest while based in Washington and made frequent trips to the Bay Area. In 1990, Ed decided to move to the Bay Area full time. He trained in Northern California until the closure of Golden Gate Fields in June 2024, at which time he bought a farm in Paris, Kentucky, and moved there establishing a horse racing stable at Turfway Park. He continued a horse racing stable in Southern California until April 2025. He now trains in Kentucky full time racing at Belterra, Churchchill Downs, Ellis Park, Indiana Downs, Keeneland, Kentucky Downs, and Turfway Park.

Ed's racing achievements include being a Multiple Graded Stakes Winning Trainer with 1,999 wins and earnings over $38 million.

Ed believes that selecting a race horse trainer is one of the most important decisions a Thoroughbred owner has to make, as it requires the right trainer with the proper experience to do it properly and successfully. Ed has an excellent reputation with his clients as being reliable, knowledgeable, responsible and trustworthy. He takes a strong interest in each horse, as he believes it is important to get to know their individual characteristics, movements and personalities. Ed encourages his clients to be actively involved with their horses by visiting the barn, watching their morning workouts and attending races. Customer service is one of the most important aspects of Ed's training business and he believes in keeping his clients up-to-date on their horses' health, training program, abilities and potential. He is always honest, up-front and fair with his clients which is why he maintains so many successful long-term relationships with them. In fact, Ed has been training for many of the same clients since the 1970's. Ed has been actively involved in Thoroughbred horse racing organizations, being on the Board of the California Thoroughbred Trainers from 1994-2009 (served as President in 2007), served on the Board of the California Thoroughbred Horseman's Foundation and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Thoroughbred Owners of California. In 2007, Ed was honored by the California Thoroughbred Breeder's Association as Outstanding Trainer of the Year.  Ed is highly respected among his clients, fellow trainers, and racing officials. 

Ed and his wife, Geralyn, own and manage Sunny Creek Farm, a 64 acre horse farm in Paris, Kentucky. The farm is used as a lay-up facility for horses, as well as home to Thoroughbred broodmares who are bred annually to produce future Thoroughbred race horses.
